NOHANZ Biennial Conference 15-17 November 2024
« » Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat June June June June June 1- 1-2 July Ireland Annual Conference: Memory and Oral History
The Oral History Network of Ireland (OHNI) in conjunction with Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute (MUSSI) is pleased to announce its 2022 conference on the theme of ‘Memory and Oral History’ which will take place in person at Maynooth University on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July 2022. Questions of memory abound in oral history. In collecting oral histories, we invite interviewees to recall now distant places and events. We ask them to explain to us and to future listeners what their experiences were and how they felt. In turn our interviewees recall, remember, and even redefine these memories. What is remembered, how it is remembered, what is forgotten and why are key questions for oral historians and the focus of this year’s conference.
Keynote Address by Professor Guy Beiner (Boston College)
‘The Vernacular Sounds and Silences of Irish Memory’
We are delighted to welcome Professor Guy Beiner, the Sullivan Chair in Irish Studies at Boston College as our keynote. His research focuses on the historical study of remembering and forgetting with interests that include oral history, folklore, public history and heritage, historiography, terrorism, and the ‘Spanish’ Influenza pandemic. Guy has authored award-winning books on history, memory and forgetting including Forgetful Remembrance: Social Forgetting and Vernacular Historiography of a Rebellion in Ulster and Remembering the Year of the French: Irish Folk History and Social Memory and edited Pandemic Re-Awakenings: The Forgotten and Unforgotten ‘Spanish’ Flu of 1918-1919.

The Idea
GIRES (Global Institute for Research, Education and Scholarship) and the Oral History & Digital Humanities Academy (ODA), committed to support the endeavors of the global scholarly community, offer a new workshop for those who wish to explore the fascinating discipline of oral history. Oral history is a highly significant source of information and in GIRES, we believe in the power of personal testimonies and that we ought to understand, explore, respect, and preserve history. Local history and oral testimonies can have a great magnitude and affect our understanding of the past. Global history is shaped by such clusters of information; personal stories can offer a clear view of past events, describe a forgotten reality, and even help us rewrite history. Despite if we consider such information important, oral history can be instrumental in the formation of collective memory and the shaping of national identities.
The Aim
Our workshop offers a step-by-step guide that will help you find your way through the maze of an oral history project. During the workshop you will learn about the essential tools and actions so you can organize, manage, and lead a successful project. We designed the workshop in a dynamic way so it can be beneficial for all participants despite their experience in such a field. Students, young scholars, independent researchers, and history, culture, and tradition enthusiasts are welcome in the friendly GIRES environment.
The Outcome
Participants will improve their academic skills, introduce oral history in their work, engage with oral tradition, and also record and preserve unwritten stories in a professional way. During the workshop we will explore all the techniques an oral historian uses and we will cover all the steps from beginning to end of a project. A substantial part of our workshop is dedicated to discussing your personal projects and through our Q&A you will find all the useful information that will improve your work. With more than 2,500 interviews in four countries (United States, Canada, Greece, and Spain) our facilitator will share his experiences and advice and through the dialogue he will try to answer all your questions. We hope that our workshop we will help you create the project of your dreams!

For nearly 15 years, Voice of Witness has honed an ethics-driven oral history methodology that cultivates powerful first-person narratives amplifying the voices of people directly impacted by—and fighting against—injustice.
We’ve adapted this approach into an online workshop series for advocates, educators, and organizations seeking to use storytelling to advance a project or mission.
Join us on Tuesday, July 26 at 4pm PT for a discussion about Mi María: Surviving the Storm, which shares 17 first-person stories of Hurricane María and its unjust aftermath within the colonial context of Puerto Rico. Despite widespread government-level failures, through these oral histories we repeatedly see communities rising together to take care of each other.
We’re excited to share that an editor and narrator from the book will stop by to join the conversation! RSVP here to receive the zoom link and purchase a copy if you don’t have one already.
