Practical introduction to oral history
Alexander Turnbull Library’s Outreach Services offers workshops for people considering using oral history in their work, community or personal projects. This introduction to oral history methodology includes:
how to plan an oral history project
choose the best equipment
achieve clear audio recordings
select informants
follow ethical procedures
develop questioning techniques
process oral history, and
make the material available for use.
Equipment is provided. All participants will also receive a comprehensive summary resource and a certificate of attendance.
Two-day course
Attendance on both days is required and places are limited. There is a gap between the two workshops, during which participants are asked to do a homework exercise.
Our training is based on the principles in the National Oral History Association of New Zealand’s Code of Ethical and Technical Practice, and international archival standards.
