Dr Nēpia Mahuika is Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Maniapoto. Nēpia is the convenor of History at the University of Waikato and has served as chair of Te Pouhere Kōrero (Māori Historians Collective of Aotearoa). He is the current President of the National Oral History Association of New Zealand. Nēpia is the author of Rethinking Oral History and Tradition (OUP, 2019), which challenges non-indigenous definitions of oral history practice, politics and theory. He is part of the working group involved in writing the New Zealand History curriculum reset for 2022.
Dr Arini Loader is Ngāti Raukawa, Te Whānau-a-Apanui, and Ngāti Whakaue. Arini is lecturer in Māori history at Victoria University of Wellington. She recently co-wrote, produced, directed and performed in the short film ‘E Whiti E Te Raa: Shine’ (2019). Her film projects are connected to her work with Mike Ross on a collection of waiata (songs), whakataukī (proverbs) and short narratives written by Māori taken prisoner of war from the bloody battle of Rangiriri in 1863. Arini’s current projects include a companion film exploring E Whiti’s historical & contemporary context, an essay on the power, poetics & genius of wāhine Māori composers, and an essay on Māori personal writing.
